What is it all about & why?
I have either been coaching rugby in the US or playing professionally in England, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, and France for the best part of the past 30 years. Different playing styles are a given in this sport, the French will have their own way of doing things compared to the muscular & more prosaic South African variations. The complexity of global rugby culture makes it exciting to watch and play.
Over the past ten years, the level of nuanced skills displayed in US youth rugby has lessened compared to age-grade international benchmarks. Aggression and physicality often make up for the shortfall in a player's rugby IQ and ingenuity. As overseas tours from the US are less common nowadays, it is more likely to travel to California or Colorado rather than to Cork or Cape Town. Players rarely accumulate learnings from these intangible age-grade differences firsthand. This is where the opportunity presents itself, giving players specialist international coaching to level up their game.
After accounting for S&C and fitness sessions, coaches have very little time with their players to focus on refining their advanced skills. Team training sessions are spent perfecting tactical plays, set-pieces & building game understanding more than developing position-specific bandwidth. I have witnessed far too many players on a losing team because they were unable to execute a pass, a kick, or a jackal as well as their opposite number who learned his or her skillset in an overseas rugby heartland. I established NXT Rugby after deciding it was time to change that.
NXT Rugby Camps will help young players build confidence, resilience, and the mental toughness that they will need to thrive under pressure - both on and off the field. Strong mental performance starts with believing in yourself, knowing that your skillset can adjust & adapt to any scenario. The camps are designed to accomplish this, the drills we execute & skills we teach will strengthen players as people. As they become better, more grounded, and more self-aware of their strongest AND weakest assets, they will inevitably grow into more influential game-changing rugby players.
